Cocoon

(The Big Band Society Large Ensemble) 2016

A Soundscape Big Band

Cocoon Band was formed in Cairo, in 2007, short after the return of its founder, international pianist Hesham Galal, from his trip to Sydney in 2006. The original line up was a collaboration between French, Lebanese, Egyptian and American artists.

In 2009 Hesham decided to add more wind instruments to the original small group, to ensure a unique sound. With the collaboration of Russian, Bulgarian, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian and Cuban artists, Cocoon Band performed in numerous jazz festivals from 2009 to 2011 including the opening of Cairo Jazz Festival 2011 short after the rise-up in Egypt and under very special circumstances where artists were afraid to perform public due to the lack of police or any sort of security.

Cocoon Sydney is the latest line up. A collaboration between Hesham Galal, the original founder and Australian artists from the Sydney Conservatorium. Cocoon  Big Band keeps the original unique sound of Cocoon Cairo, adding a new soundscape with the Sydney line up.
